#98 - The Truth About Parkrun Dogs: Gear Safety, Stress, and Canine Advocacy

Just because you can parkrun with your dog, doesn't mean you should.

In this episode of the Who Paws Wins podcast, we are tackling a massive topic in the running and canine community: parkrun dogs. While we are incredibly lucky that you can still take dogs to parkrun on short, handheld leads, the reality inside the Saturday morning "throng" isn't always a joyful experience for our four-legged friends.
We cut through the noise look directly at the ethics, behaviour, and physical safety of the dogs running beside us. If you see a dog pulling fiercely on a flat collar or a slip lead this weekend, this episode explains exactly why that is a major hazard to their health.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
  • Canine Biomechanics & Gear Safety: Why running dog choking is a real threat. We look at the actual medical facts linking collar neck compression to glaucoma in dogs and long-term thyroid problems.
  • The Anatomy of a Non-Restrictive Dog Harness: Why not all gear is equal, and how to identify a proper, activity-driven y-shaped dog harness that protects the shoulders and airway.
  • Dog Behaviour at Parkrun: How to know if your dog is genuinely happy or completely overwhelmed by the crowd, noise, and excitement.
  • Environmental Factors: Managing arthritic dog exercise, running with an old dog, the "7-second rule" for running with dogs in summer, and protecting joints when running on tarmac.
  • Parkrun Dog Etiquette: Practical tips for a safer run, including why you should always start to the side rather than deep in the crowd.
Saturday morning shouldn't just be about chasing a new parkrun pb with your dog; it should be about being your dog's ultimate advocate. Tune in to find out how to make your weekly 5k run with your dog a safe, happy, and fulfilling experience for both ends of the lead!
