Turmeric Essential Oil

Turmeric is often spoken about in the dog world for musculoskeletal support but it offers a lot more than just that and useful for more species than just dogs.  It is an oil I use daily for my dogs and me as it happens and it has so many benefits.  Commonly known for its Ayurvedic health uses in India both the root and the essential oil have a long history of use that continues to this day.

The root, the powder form you are probably more familiar with is rich in the compound curcumin however, its bioavailability - its ability to be absorbed in the body, is poor hence often seen in the form of Golden Paste - which unfortunately several of my dogs do not like which led me to turn to the oil where there is no such problem.  The oil is steam distilled from the turmeric root and has two unique chemical components, Turmerone and ar-Turmerone.

Curcuminoid molecules are too large to be volatilized during the steam distillation process and therefore should not exist in high quality Turmeric essential oil, Turmeric essential oil does contain other compounds that have beneficial properties. Turmerones are the most prominent volatile aromatic compounds contained within Turmeric essential oil. The most abundant turmerone in Turmeric is ar-Turmerone, which has been shown in experimental research to support cellular, immune system, and nervous system function when taken internally with no problem with bioavailability.  And experimental research suggests that when combined, ar-Turmerone may increase the bioavailability of curcumin when paired with the powder, allowing it to reach systemic circulation and exert its beneficial biological activities.

Turmeric oil really is a staple for a daily health routine for either you or your pet and, when taken internally, evidence suggests that it can promote a positive immune function and response as it may enhance cellular antioxidant enzymes* (e.g. glutathione)

Turmeric oil can help to promote good skin too should your pet be having some issues and is even an effective tick repellant too.
Diffusing Turmeric essential oil can help to promote feelings of positivity and to improve mood.
Use turmeric topically after activity for your active dogs or horses or those pets who are advanced in years and need a little extra help for their muscles and joints. Internal use of Turmeric oil.   When added to a veggie cap, may help support healthy nervous and cellular function

Now you do have to be cautious with turmeric paste, powder or oil because it has anti-coagulant properties - be cautious with use with NSAIDS and prior to surgery stop at least 24 hours before surgery and several days after.
