Is Your Dog Secretly Struggling? The Hidden Signs of Anxiety (And How You Can Help)

As dog mums, we want nothing more than for our friends to be happy, confident, and full of life. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, our dogs might be silently struggling with anxiety. It’s heartbreaking to watch, and often, it leaves us feeling stressed and unsure of how to help.

You might be thinking, "My dog isn't anxious, they're just naughty on walks," or "They only act up when I leave." But here's the truth: many challenging behaviours are actually your dog's way of telling you they're overwhelmed, scared, or stressed and triggers are not just visual and auditory but aromatic - our dogs live in a world of scent something we really can’t appreciate and that unknown scent may in fact be the issue.
More Than Just "Bad Behaviour": Understanding Dog Anxiety
Anxiety in dogs isn't always obvious. It's not just shaking or hiding under the bed during a thunderstorm (though that's certainly a sign!). It can manifest in many ways:
  • The "Velcro" Dog: Is your dog constantly glued to your side, even when you're just moving between rooms?
  • Restlessness & Pacing: Do they struggle to settle down, often pacing or unable to find a comfortable spot?
  • Excessive Vocalization: Is there a lot of barking, whining, or howling, especially when you're not around or new people arrive?
  • Destructive Chewing: Are your shoes, furniture, or door frames falling victim to chewing, particularly when left alone?
  • House Soiling: Accidents indoors, especially when you're out, can be a sign of distress, not just a potty problem.
  • Leash Reactivity: Lunging, barking, or pulling frantically when seeing other dogs or people on walks is often rooted in fear or overstimulation.
  • Subtle Signals: Even yawning, lip-licking, or showing the whites of their eyes ("whale eye") in stressful situations can be their way of saying, "I'm uncomfortable."
These behaviors aren't about being disobedient; they're cries for help from an anxious dog. And here's the difficult truth: left unaddressed, this constant stress can genuinely impact your dog's physical health and even shorten their lifespan.

The Cycle of Stress: Why It's Hard on Both of You
When your dog is anxious, it creates a stressful cycle. They feel fear, act out, and then often get "corrected" or isolated, which can unfortunately reinforce their negative associations. And for you? Every walk becomes a dreaded event. Leaving the house is filled with guilt. Watching your dog's world shrink is heartbreaking. I know exactly how that feels. I've been there, navigating the complexities of an anxious dog, feeling uncertain and overwhelmed.  I went through this with my blind dog Inka and it was so hard, her behaviour got worse in the house because she struggled to go for a walk and no amount of enrichment games in the house took the place of the exercise and enrichment she would have got from exploring the countryside.  But what I discovered is that true transformation comes from understanding the root of their anxiety and approaching it with empathy and the right tools and once I started to do that utilising essential oils to calm and build confidence we were then able to embark on behaviour training and our progress really took off.

A Gentle Path to Peace: Building Confidence, Calming Fears
I was alone but the good news for you is that you don't have to navigate this alone, and your dog can learn to be more confident and calm. My approach combines compassionate understanding with practical, easy-to-follow strategies to help both of you thrive.
Imagine:
  • Enjoying peaceful walks where your dog feels confident, not reactive.
  • Coming home to a calm greeting, not destruction or excessive barking.
  • Your dog resting peacefully instead of pacing nervously.
  • A deeper, more harmonious bond between you and your best friend.
This isn't just a dream. It's a journey we can embark on together. By understanding common anxiety triggers, learning how holistic tools like essential oils can naturally soothe, and practicing fun, confidence-boosting exercises, you can gently guide your dog from fear to flourishing.
