If your pet struggles with anxiety, whether from thunderstorms, separation, or new environments, aromatherapy may offer a natural and effective solution.
Essential oils such as lavender, copaiba, frankincense and rose, have been widely recognised for their calming properties, but using them safely for pets requires knowledge and caution. In this blog, weâll explore how to use essential oils for pet anxiety, focusing on aromatherapy techniques that can help soothe your nervous pet.
It is important to pair this with behaviour modifications and not just oils alone and this is one of the main reasons people seem to have poor success with essential oils along with not using good quality oils.
Why Essential Oils Can Help Calm PetsEssential oils work through the olfactory system, influencing brain chemistry to promote relaxation. Lavender, chamomile, and frankincense are some of the most commonly recommended calming essential oils for dogs and cats. These oils can help reduce stress, promote better sleep, and ease nervous behaviors in pets.
However, not all essential oils are safe for animals, and incorrect use can do more harm than good. Understanding proper dilution, application methods, and safety guidelines is key to ensuring your pet benefits from aromatherapy.
Although lavender always seems to be a popular choice for humans 50% of dogs actually don't like it so my top choices are Bergamot, Grounding & Calming Blend, Vetiver, Copaiba & Wild Orange
Safe Aromatherapy Techniques for Pets
1. Diffusion for a Relaxing Atmosphere
Using an essential oil diffuser is one of the safest ways to introduce aromatherapy into your petâs environment. To use lavender essential oil for dog anxiety:
Add 3-4 drops of your chosen essential oil to a water-based diffuser.
Place the diffuser in an open area where your pet can leave if they feel uncomfortable.
Run the diffuser for on an intermittent setting to avoid overwhelming your petâs senses.
2. DIY Calming Spray
A gentle mist can be sprayed on pet bedding, collars, or around their favourite resting areas:
Mix 1 drop of of your chosen oil with 1 cup of distilled water in a spray bottle.
Shake well before each use.
Lightly mist your petâs bed or crate, ensuring the area is well-ventilated.
3. Aromatherapy Massage with Diluted Oils
Topical application should always be done with proper dilution:
Mix 1 drop of your chosen oil with a tablespoon of carrier oil (such as coconut)
Rub the blend between your hands before gently massaging your petâs neck or chest.
Always perform a patch test before widespread application to check for skin sensitivity.
Experiment with blends but always introduce oils when your dog is calm so you create a positive emotional association with that oil along with the therapeutic benefits. You can also do some self selection too and see what your pet wants.
