Dalby Forest CaniX

So Dalby Forest in Yorkshire was a new venue for CaniX and it did not disappoint this huge area of woodland located on the Southern Slopes of the North Yorkshire Moor is known as The Great Yorkshire Forest with over 8500 acres.

With miles and miles of hilly trails it was a spectacular drive to the camping point albeit at times wondering if you had gone wrong and relying on the map as phone signal was poor to say the least.  I guided several friends in as I was able to arrive during daylight hours and it was rare if a sat nav got the route right.  Google maps insisted I go up a road that said “ignore your sat nav”.  Relying on signs to the forest instead I navigated successfully there.

A lovely walk on arrival showed lots of interesting sites and dogs had no shortage of sniffing and muddy paw opportunities.

Set up and relaxing at night we were treated to a spectacular view of the moon and stars which photos could not do justice - albeit some cloud cover Sat night it did blow over and we were treated to what Dark Skies are all about.

The trails were mainly fire track for some straights before heading into the wood for the more technical bit and on the Saturday I thought it a somewhat hilly course disputed by the Welsh and folks from somewhere called Rossendale 😂 although the hills were a lot flatter on the Sunday!

My big powerhouse Rowan didn't want to run, not sure why but trees seem to spook him at the moment. So reliable Seren popped out of retirement again to run with her sister Evie and we had an enjoyable trot around the course.   On the gravelly downhill I was somewhat relieved with the absence of Rowan whose mantra is scream if you want to go faster but with the girls we enjoyed a steady and safe descent down!

The forest itself had loads of trails suitable for strollers so the disabled gang were well catered for and had a lovely grassy patch where we were camped for them to run and roll around on.

Taking my blind dog Inka out in the afternoon for a canicross run with our pals from Let Me Jog Your Dog was a lovely run for her and we didn’t meet anyone except another CaniX member so a great location for anxious dog walks even on a Saturday afternoon.
