Does Your Pet Smell?

Recently a lot of people have been asking for an oil to help their pet smell better.  So my question back is always why do they smell?

Sure, I can give you many different options for masking the smell helping your pet smell fragrant but isn’t it better to get to the root cause of why and assist them that way?

So they may have rolled in something (Maz was rolling around in horse poo today probably not a bad smell compared to most other options)- in which case a fairly easy solution (I say fairly as dead fish really stinks and I am assurred that so does skunk spray..) so nice bath with some coconut oil soap - very cleansing and soothing for the skin is a great option as is a dry shampoo.  I like to add On Guard to my soap or lavender and cedarwood to my dry shampoo - sometimes they need a combo of both as some smells keep coming!

But what else?

Do they have a fungal infection?  Other skin problems with maybe a wound or skin irritation?  Do they have problems with their ears or anal glands - Poor diet can affect the skin and odour of a dog and dietary changes can make a massive difference in the overall health of your dog which you may notice as their smell.

So many reasons that your pet may smell and with that so many different options for optimising their health and well-being.

I always recommend starting from the diet and working from there.
Adding in a digestive enzyme and probiotic can assist further and this in itself may clear up any skin or ear issues.  But if it doesn’t ?  Some other options to support good skin health is On Guard both internally and topically or copaiba.  Lavender or frankincense oil is also great for skin soothing and support.  Especially if your pet is getting elderly and finding it difficult to groom?

Are they having some bladder and bowel issues?  They may need pads, or increased washing or some other support.  There are many different options to support the bladder or bowel again depending on cause and application will depend on that too - whether it needs to be internal, aromatic or topical to the abdomen.

Do they have dental problems either teeth or poor gum health?  Again good diet will help teeth and that does not include kibble as despite what manufacturers say it does not support good dental care.  I opt for a BARF diet and that is supported by a variety of chews and teeth cleaning as needed with some essential oils - particularly Myrrh.

In a nutshell - if your dog’s physical health is in balance they should not smell so work on the cause of that imbalance and work to restore equilibrium.
